Russet Apple and Gouda Grilled Cheese

Dust lies on my Kitchen Aid as thick as a dredging of flour. It may look like finely ground buckwheat, but it's actually micro sawdust from the home renovations we are undertaking this month. It's during grueling, exhausting, yet rewarding times like these when you simply don't attempt to cook. When the living room furniture is piled up in your kitchen, making it impossible to move, you just have to give up, drop into an over sized armchair, prop your feet up on the oven door and think about what to defrost for dinner.

Fortunately, I have a plethora of meals too choose from as I usually prepare extra when I am cooking a freezer friendly meal and stash it away for such times as these. Chicken curry, cabbage rolls, lasagna--we haven't been going hungry, despite the barricade in front of the fridge door.

Lunch is another story. Again, a girl's gotta eat and there's no time or space for fuss, so I've been working my way through a loaf of miche blanche, a huge wedge of Gouda, and a pile of Russets, my favorite munching apple. These ingredients come together to make a very satisfying sandwich-Noah even agrees.
Hmm, then again, anything with apple seems to agree with him, especially if it's just that: an apple, clutched tightly in his little hand, as he wanders around from room to room, wondering when his house will be back to normal!

This sandwich is yet another stopover along the comfort food journey that I am taking this fall.
With a dab of old style apple mustard, it's impossible to resist, and who would want to? With a combination like this still warm in my belly, and my fingers still slightly greasy, the dust doesn't look so bad.
And that says a lot.

I love the looks of this sandwich. I can totally sympathize with not being able to move in the kitchen, we are currently in the middle of an overhaul ourselves. Thank god for the freezer :)

this looks so good I love grilled cheese with apples but I always use cheddar and grannysmiths. I bet this combo is great.

My favorite foods: Apple Bread Cheese (The ABC's of yum). I would buy that same combo for all my traveling when I was a younger man. That and a swiss army knife got me far. I wouldn't put the apple on the bread just because it was easier to eat it with incisors. Unless it was Norwegian brown cheese, then the apple slices were a must on the bread.

Old cheddar melted on apple pie is a must too.

When the kitchen is not functional, creativity must rule. Apple, Gouda Grilled is the very best! Apple mustard sounds really interesting, must look for that.

Hmm. Apple mustard certainly sounds intriguing in this comforting sandwich. The renovations will all be worth it in the end. Hopefully it will all be in order by Christmas!

Looks fantastic and deliciously crunchy! I am a big fan of gourmet grilled cheese. I honestly don't remember the last time I made a regular grilled cheese with cheddar! This looks devine! It's so easy to class up a grilled cheese, isn't it? And I truly believe it all really comes down to the bread - I use a great crusty European fermentation bread for mine. Fantastic.

I love cute little chubby kid fingers!

And that sandwich made my belly growl. It's too close to lunch to be reading food blogs!

Hi Kelly- You must try it, it's a perfect snack for when you are up late studying for those finals of yours.

Hi mlindley- Ah ha! it's that time of year, I guess. Good luck with your reno.

Hi cakespy- Thanks for dropping by UtHC! Speaking of beautiful...your blog is just that!

Hi Shayne- Yep, it's a pretty classic combo-cheese and apples- but it never gets old.

Hi Zaak- Yum. How about some wine with your cheese? BTW, you making some goat cheese yet??

Hi half cups- Mmm, grainy apple mustard:locally made with apple cider and maple syrup.

Hi Valli- While the major reno's are out of the way, the little things tend to drag on...Christmas is certainly an incentive!

Hi Mandy- you're right. Great bread makes the sandwich. Why waste an amazing cheese on some nasty Wonderbread?

Hi Melanie- You must be feeling better! You're drooling over food! :)

Hi Abby- I've already HAD lunch and am getting hungry as I check my feeds.Oh no!

What amazing timing, Aimée! I'm not much for apples, but just this morning, I was thinking that since we're in the heart of apple season, maybe I should try something savory with them. And then I find this gorgeous, delicious sounding sandwich. I'm ready to try it right now, maybe with a little sliced ham or strips of crisp bacon even.

I hate renovations... you are amazingly brave to do that while you are pregnant.

This is a great combo, Aimée. Would have to try it next time I have gouda.

p/s: love the photo of the apple in your little one's hands.

Aimee I have tagged you for a MEME. Of course you are under no obligation to actually do it at this busy time of the year, but I'd enjoy it if you checked out my answers at my blog!!

Hi Erika- Apple muffins are a favorite around here! I used diced Russets for mine and they were great!

Hi Terry- This just might make an apple lover out of you! Mmmm, bacon, yes please!

Hi Mandy- I get mine locally from a ciderie-let me know if you can't find any.

Hi Helene- Too late! I'm already exhausted! :)We're wrapping up soon, though.

Hi Deb- Thanks! I can't believe Noah stood still long enough for me to snap the photo!

Hi Nora- Pregnancy and renovations seem to be my lot in life. I'm either brave--or stupid!

Hi Kate- Bread, cheese and fruit-what's not to love? Thanks for the congrats, I'm looking forward to the end.

Hi Valli- What fun! Alas, I am lacking in both time and brain power these days and shall pass on this one. Enjoyed yours, though!

I found your blog through Sarah's Sugar and Spice Blog and have become a lurker. I really enjoy reading your posts and drooling over your cooking. I was going to keep my lurker status but then I read the post about how you came here from BC and thought I should post to tell you how great your blog is. I am also from BC and now call Montreal home so I can really relate to missing family, especially now that I have a child of my own. Still, I decided to remain a lurker. I then saw the post on Dana from Penticton and thought it to be the final sign. I was born and raised there. All this to bring me here to praise you and your blog! It's a lovely read.

Hi Michelle- He just loves cradling an apple in his hands and munching away on it.Wish it were that easy with all his food!

Hi missweb- A very warm welcome to you! It was so nice of you to speak up and I am very happy you enjoy the blog. BC girls rock!

Hi Aimee, Finally it's letting me post a comment!

Poor you with the renovations. That said if it improves the house and you're going to love it even more it's worth going through the hassle.

Now then, could you please describe apple mustard as I'm intrigued.

That looks mouth watering! What a unique combination.

I love a good Granny Smith in a grilled cheese, but I don't think I've ever had a Russet! Looks delicious.
